The short answer
An SBI debit card turns credit card bill payments into SBI Rewardz points. On its own it pays 0.25%. With the ₹1 lakh monthly milestone it reaches 0.5% to 0.75%, and in your birthday month up to 1% on Elite tier.
-
Worth it: you pay ₹1 lakh or more of card bills a month and can route it through an SBI debit card on SBI UniPay, Paytm, MobiKwik, CRED or SaveSage.
-
The one rule that matters: cross ₹1 lakh of qualifying spend in a calendar month. That single bonus is worth as much as the base points on the whole ₹1 lakh.
How your Rewardz points add up
- Base: 2 points for every ₹200 of eligible debit card spend.
- Tier: Dreamer adds 0, Affluent adds 1, and Elite adds 2 more points per ₹200.
- ₹1 lakh milestone: add 1,000 points once when eligible monthly spend reaches ₹1 lakh.
- Birthday month: add 2 more points per ₹200 in this guide’s conservative calculation.
Each point is worth ₹0.25 on the Rewardz catalogue. You can earn up to 10,000 points in a month.
| Rate | Tier, points and value |
|---|---|
| 0.25% | Dreamer, 1×2 RP per ₹200. Everyone starts here |
| 0.375% | Affluent, 1.5×3 RP per ₹200: 2 base + 1 tier bonus |
| 0.50% | Elite, 2×4 RP per ₹200: 2 base + 2 tier bonus |
The maths: 2 RP × ₹0.25 = ₹0.50 on every ₹200, which is 0.25%. The multiplier applies to Bank Points (base, birthday, fuel and international points), not to the activation bonus, the milestone bonus or partner-brand points.
Tiers: how you qualify, upgrade and drop
| Tier | How you get there |
|---|---|
| Elite2× points | 7,000+ Bank Points last month, or SBI’s Elite customer segment |
| Affluent1.5× points | 2,000+ Bank Points last month, or an Affluent segment |
| Dreamer1× points | Default for everyone else |
- The higher of two tests winsSBI places you on whichever is higher: the segment the bank assigns you, or last month’s Bank Points. Salary and wealth customers often start above Dreamer.
- Upgrades: checked every monthTiers are re-evaluated around the 10th. A new tier applies from the next evaluation cycle, not to points already posted.
- Downgrades: twice a yearReviewed in January and July, and by one level at a time, so one quiet month doesn’t drop an Elite member straight to Dreamer.
- Only Bank Points countTier multiplier points and partner-brand points don’t count towards the 2,000 or 7,000 threshold. Base points alone reach 2,000 at ₹2 lakh of monthly spend.
Your tier shows in the SBI Rewardz app and on rewardz.sbi.bank.in (opens in a new tab) after you log in. Base and multiplier points post as separate entries, and a refund reverses both in proportion.
Milestone and birthday bonuses
Monthly milestone: 1,000 RP at ₹1 lakh
- Bonus
- 1,000 RP, worth ₹250Flat for every tier. The tier multiplier doesn’t apply to it.
- Trigger
- ₹1 lakh of PoS and e-commerce spend in a monthCard swipes, taps and online payments. ATM withdrawals and UPI from your account don’t count.
- How often
- Once a month₹2 lakh or ₹5 lakh still earns one 1,000 RP bonus, not one per ₹1 lakh.
- Excluded
- MCC 6540Wallet loads and other stored-value funding. Top-ups on Paytm or MobiKwik wallets don’t count towards ₹1 lakh; pay the card bill directly instead.
Birthday month: 2× base points
SBI gives “2X Reward Points on all spend during your birth month”, based on the date of birth in your SBI records. Read as one extra set of base points, it adds 2 RP per ₹200 on top of your tier rate:
| Tier | Normal month | Birthday month | Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dreamer | 2 RP | 4 RP | 0.50% |
| Affluent | 3 RP | 5 RP | 0.625% |
| Elite | 4 RP | 6 RP | 0.75% |
Not doubled twice: the birthday bonus here is 2 RP per ₹200, the same for every tier. Doubling Elite’s 4 RP to 8 RP would count the tier bonus twice. SBI’s tier terms list the birthday bonus among the points the multiplier can apply to, so Affluent and Elite members may see more than this; treat these figures as the floor.
₹1 lakh of bill payments, worked out
Assumptions: ₹1,00,000 of qualifying spend in one calendar month, none of it MCC 6540, so the milestone triggers once. The birthday bonus is one extra set of base points (1,000 RP on ₹1 lakh).
| Tier | Regular month | Birthday month |
|---|---|---|
| Dreamer1,000 base + 0 tier + 1,000 milestone | 2,000 RP₹500 · 0.50% | 3,000 RP₹750 · 0.75% |
| Affluent1,000 base + 500 tier + 1,000 milestone | 2,500 RP₹625 · 0.625% | 3,500 RP₹875 · 0.875% |
| Elite1,000 base + 1,000 tier + 1,000 milestone | 3,000 RP₹750 · 0.75% | 4,000 RP₹1,000 · 1.00% |
Four more real-world cases
- ₹40,000, Dreamer
- 400 RP = ₹100 (0.25%)No milestone. ₹60,000 more in the month adds 1,000 RP.
- ₹99,000, Affluent
- 1,485 RP = ₹371₹1,000 more spend takes it to ₹1 lakh and 2,500 RP (₹625). The last ₹1,000 is worth ₹254.
- ₹1,50,000, Elite
- 4,000 RP = ₹1,000 (0.67%)1,500 base + 1,500 tier + one 1,000 milestone. The second ₹50,000 earns no extra milestone.
- ₹3,00,000, Elite, birthday
- 10,000 RP = ₹2,500 (0.83%)3,000 base + 3,000 tier + 3,000 birthday + 1,000 milestone hits the cap exactly. Anything more earns nothing that month.
Credit card bill payment platforms that work
These five accept SBI debit cards for credit card bills, and the payments earn SBI Rewardz points.
| Platform | Fee |
|---|---|
| SBI UniPayRuPay, Visa, Mastercard; any amount | NilVia YONO, OnlineSBI or UniPay quick pay |
| PaytmBest with RuPay | Free on RuPayAt the time of writing |
| MobiKwikBest with RuPay | Nil on RuPay |
| CREDBills of ₹50,000 and above | Shown before you pay |
| SaveSageRuPay debit cards | Nil on RuPay |
- Default pick
- SBI UniPaySBI’s own BBPS service, no fee, every network. The interface is plain; check the biller and amount before paying.
- RuPay holders
- Paytm, MobiKwik or SaveSageFree and quick. Pay the card bill itself, never a wallet top-up (MCC 6540 kills the milestone).
- Big single bills
- CRED, or split across daysA virtual debit card stops at ₹50,000 of online spend a day; a ₹1 lakh bill needs two days or a physical card with a higher limit.
SBI doesn’t publish a list of bill-payment platforms that earn points; this list reflects payments that earned points as of October 2026, and platforms can change fees or card support. Points arrive on SBI’s posting schedule, not instantly (see caps and rules). For bank transfer and UPI routes to pay a card bill, see Pay your card bill and the card bill UPI ID tool.
Physical or virtual debit card
Generate a virtual debit card in YONO
- Log in to YONO, open Cards, then SBI Debit Card.
- Pick your savings account and tap Request for new card.
- Choose Virtual Debit Card, accept the terms and submit.
- Enter the OTP. The card is generated instantly; activate it.
Turn on online payments first
Every new SBI debit card, virtual included, starts with online, international and contactless use switched off. In YONO go to Cards → SBI Debit Card → Manage Limit/Usage, switch on e-commerce and set the daily limit. OnlineSBI, YONO Lite, SBI ATMs and the IVR can do the same.
- Eligible accounts
- Regular savings accountsSBI issues the virtual card only on normal savings accounts, not financial-inclusion (FI) accounts.
- Zero-balance accounts
- Check before you planBasic (BSBD) and small accounts are financial-inclusion accounts, so they can’t get the virtual card. A regular SBI savings account, which has had no minimum-balance charge since 2020, can.
- How many
- One virtual card per accountBlock it and wait 15 days for a new one; at most two online requests a year. A blocked virtual card can’t be unblocked.
Caps, posting and reward rules
- 10,000 RP a month, at mostWorth ₹2,500. It is SBI’s ceiling on Reward Points per month; it isn’t stated per card, so don’t expect a second SBI debit card to double it.
- Per transaction: “a cap of Rs. 1,000”That is SBI’s exact wording, a rupee figure, not 1,000 RP. As points, ₹1,000 is 4,000 RP, which a single payment would need ₹4 lakh at Dreamer rate to earn. For bill payments the monthly 10,000 RP cap is the one you’ll meet.
- What earnsPoS (swipe, tap) and e-commerce purchases with the card. Fund transfers, ATM withdrawals and UPI from your account aren’t card spends. MCC 6540 is the only code SBI names, and it’s excluded from the milestone.
- When points postBase points post after the transaction, and tier multiplier points arrive as a separate entry. Milestone and birthday bonuses are credited after the month closes. Campaign points take longer: SBI’s recent campaigns promised 60 to 90 days after the campaign ends.
- 30-day lockNewly posted points stay locked for 30 days before you can redeem them. They show in your balance or expiry schedule meanwhile.
- Expiry: 24 monthsPoints earned from 1 June 2024 are valid for 24 months. Older points kept their 36 months.
Redeeming points
Redeem on rewardz.sbi.bank.in (opens in a new tab), the SBI Rewardz app, YONO or OnlineSBI.
| Option | Good to know |
|---|---|
| Bills and recharges | Mobile, DTH, electricity, gas and FASTag through Bharat Bill Pay; the easiest way to use points like cash |
| Flights, buses and hotels | SBI states no convenience fee |
| Gift vouchers | Any handling fee shows at checkout |
| Merchandise | Compare the catalogue price with other stores first |
| Movie tickets | On BookMyShow |
Other ways to earn
- New card activation
- Up to 300 RPThree payments of ₹2,000 or more within two months of issue: 50, then 100, then 150 RP. Wealth debit cards: up to 500 RP for three ₹5,000 payments within a month.
- IOCL co-branded RuPay
- 6 RP per ₹200 at IOCL outlets3× at Indian Oil pumps (0.75%); 2 RP per ₹200 everywhere else.
- International spends
- 2× points0.5% back on Dreamer, against SBI’s 3% + GST charge on international PoS and online spends. Rarely worth it for the points.
- Partner brands
- Extra pointsAt SBI Rewardz partners such as LuLu, Trends and GRT Jewellers. These are partner points, not multiplied by your tier.
SBI Rewardz Carnival 7.0: 15 Oct to 31 Dec 2026
3× regular points on Classic, Global and Gold cards, 6× on Platinum, World, Select and Infinite, for PoS and online spends of ₹2,000 or more at apparel, electronics, food and beverages, jewellery, lifestyle, travel and retail merchants. Eligibility is by merchant MCC, so credit card bill payments don’t qualify. Campaign points follow the campaign’s own terms, separate from the regular milestone and cap.
Getting the most, and mistakes to avoid
Do
- Bunch payments so one calendar month crosses ₹1 lakh, rather than ₹60,000 in each of two months.
- Push bigger bills into your birthday month: it’s the only month that reaches 1% on Elite.
- Stop at the cap: ₹4.5 lakh on Elite, ₹6 lakh on Affluent, ₹9 lakh on Dreamer in a normal month; ₹3 lakh, ₹3.6 lakh and ₹4.5 lakh in your birthday month.
- Hold a RuPay variant for the widest free platform choice, and a Visa or Mastercard one for UniPay as backup.
- Redeem regularly for bill payments or vouchers so points don’t reach their 24-month expiry.
Avoid
- Loading a wallet and paying from it. Wallet loads are MCC 6540 and don’t count towards the milestone.
- Counting on the bonus per ₹1 lakh. It’s 1,000 RP once a month, however much you spend.
- Planning a big month on a fresh virtual card without raising the e-commerce limit; it stays at ₹50,000 a day.
- Expecting points the same day. Check the next month’s postings, then the 30-day lock.
Quick answers
How much is one SBI Rewardz point worth?
₹0.25. The Rewardz catalogue prices items at 4 points to the rupee, so 1,000 RP is ₹250 and the 10,000 RP monthly cap is ₹2,500.
Do I get 1,000 bonus points for every ₹1 lakh?
No. The milestone pays 1,000 RP once in a month when your PoS and online spend reaches ₹1 lakh. ₹3 lakh in a month still earns one 1,000 RP bonus.
Does the birthday month double my tier bonus too?
Plan on one extra set of base points: 2 RP per ₹200 on top of your tier rate. That takes Elite from 4 to 6 RP per ₹200 and ₹1 lakh to 4,000 RP, or 1%.
Is the per-transaction cap 1,000 points?
No. SBI writes “a cap of Rs. 1,000/- per transaction”, a rupee amount. The cap you’ll actually reach is 10,000 RP a month.
Which platform is best for paying card bills?
SBI UniPay for any network with no fee, Paytm, MobiKwik or SaveSage for RuPay debit cards, CRED for bills of ₹50,000 and above.
Does the virtual debit card earn the same points?
Yes, 2 RP per ₹200 since 5 June 2025, plus the milestone, birthday and tier bonuses. It’s free, but online spend is capped at ₹50,000 a day.
When can I use my points?
Bonuses post after the month ends, and new points are locked for 30 days after posting. After that you can redeem them on SBI Rewardz, YONO or OnlineSBI.
Do SBI Rewardz points expire?
Yes. Points earned from 1 June 2024 expire 24 months after they’re earned.
Do Carnival offers apply to credit card bill payments?
No. Carnival 7.0 accelerates spends of ₹2,000 or more in apparel, electronics, food and beverages, jewellery, lifestyle, travel and retail, decided by the merchant’s MCC.
